Enhance your decor with an authentic Ancient Greek amphora, crafted in the red-figure pottery style. Amphorae were among the most important vessels of antiquity, used for storing wine and olive oil. This piece showcases the artistry of classical Athens, where red-figure pottery flourished from the 6th to the 3rd century BCE, allowing detailed depictions of mythological and heroic scenes.
This amphora presents two sides rich in symbolism:
- First side: Heracles wrestles the Nemean Lion, his first labour. The hero throws the beast over his shoulder as the goddess Athena and youth Iolaus watch on. Athena holds a spear and wears a helm and the serpent-trimmed aegis cape. Iolaus carries his uncle's sword and club—ineffective against the lion’s impenetrable hide.
- Reverse side: A depiction of the gods Hermes and Artemis. Hermes, messenger of the gods and protector of travel, trade, and communication, stands beside Artemis, goddess of the hunt, wilderness, archery, and the moon.
