The amphora was one of the most characteristic vases of antiquity, traditionally used to store wine and olive oil. This particular piece is crafted in the red-figure pottery style, developed in Athens around 520 BCE and dominant until the 4rd century BCE. The technique allowed artists to paint figures in natural clay-red tones against a black background, offering more detail and lifelike depictions than the earlier black-figure style.
This vase features two important scenes:
- Front side: Hercules battling the Nemean Lion, one of his Twelve Labors, symbolizing strength and heroism.
- Reverse side: A depiction of a music lesson from Ancient Greece, celebrating education and cultural refinement.
