Attributed to the Sosias Painter(c. 500 BCE) and preserved at the **Altes Museum, Berlin**, this kylix (wine cup) depicts the intimate scene of **Achilles binding the wounds of Patroclus**.
The kylix was the most common type of drinking cup in Ancient Greece, shallow and wide with two horizontal handles, central to the culture of the **symposion**. The red-figure technique, developed in Athens around 520 BCE, replaced the earlier black-figure style and allowed for more naturalistic rendering of anatomy, movement, and expression.
Achilles and Patroclus are immortalized as one of the most legendary warrior pairs in Greek literature. Their deep bond, celebrated in **Homer’s Iliad**, inspired centuries of art and storytelling about friendship, mentorship, love, and heroic loss.
