Celebrate the timeless artistry of Ancient Greece with this exquisite 24cm black-figure ceramic plate, handmade and hand-painted in Greece. The central motif depicts Ajax and Achilles, two legendary heroes of the Trojan War, seated opposite each other while playing a board game. This iconic scene captures a rare moment of respite amidst battle, reflecting both the humanity and intensity of Greek warriors.
The design is attributed to Exekias, one of the most renowned Athenian potters and painters of the 6th century BCE. Created around 540–530 BCE, Exekias’ works are celebrated for their precision, expressive detail, and balanced composition. His depiction of Ajax and Achilles playing 'pessoi' (a strategic board game) is among the most famous images of black-figure pottery. The figures are painted in black slip against the natural red clay, with incised details that bring their features, armor, and the gaming board vividly to life.
Black-figure pottery dominated Greek vase painting between the 7th and 5th centuries BCE, prized for its strong contrast and fine line work. Plates like this served both functional and decorative roles, often used in domestic and ceremonial contexts.
This faithful reproduction is handcrafted using traditional wheel-throwing, kiln-firing, and painting techniques passed down for generations in Greece. Every detail has been carefully executed to preserve the authenticity of the original masterpiece.
