This hydria is a faithful museum-quality replica of a red-figure masterpiece from the Classical period (early 5th century BCE). Red-figure vase painting, developed in Athens around 520 BCE, replaced the earlier black-figure style and allowed artists to render figures with greater detail and realism.
The decoration portrays the Sack of Troy, an extraordinary multi-figure narrative encircling the vessel’s shoulder — an unusual composition for this shape. The detailed scene includes:
Aeneas carrying his father Anchises, with his son Askanios leading.
Cassandra, clinging to the Palladion, beseeching Ajax not to harm her.
Priam, seated at an altar, mourning with the body of young Astyanax, slain by Neoptolemos.
Women depicted in grief and resistance, attacking with household tools.
This rendering is thought to reflect contemporary events: the Persian sack of Athens and the Acropolis, evoked through the myth of Troy’s destruction.
The original vase is preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli.
