This terracotta mask portrays Comedy and Tragedy Masks of Theatre with Green Patina. Comedy and Tragedy masks were worn in ancient Greece during the golden age, around 500-300 BC, and are paired together to show the two extremes of human emotion. Masks were used in all three categories of ancient Greek theatre, that of tragedy, satiric drama and comedy. They originate from the Dionysiac feasts during which the participants used to paint their faces with the dark coloured dregs of the new wine and to decorate their heads with leaves and branches.
The hand-finished, kiln-fired clay highlights brows, mouth line, and hair details, giving the surface depth and presence on the wall.
Technique: terracotta (earthenware) clay is shaped, slowly dried, and kiln-fired, then hand-patinated for a warm, archaeological tone with gentle highlights.
